Celebrating the High Holy Days 2010

We are so excited to see everyone this fall, both new and familiar faces!   As you return from your summer adventures, you are warmly welcome to celebrate with your fellow students on campus!  The quarter system at the University of Chicago makes the High Holy Days a much more exciting time because they coincide with the beginning of the academic year.  This quick reference guide will acquaint you with the many options that are available.

If you are interested in learning about the availability of kosher food on campus, please see our page on meals.

Rosh Hashanah:  9/8 - 9/10

This year Rosh Hashanah falls early in the month of September.  Since this means that most students will not arrive on campus until after the holiday, Hillel will not be hosting Rosh Hashanah services this year.

But not to worry!!!  There are still several options available if you plan to celebrate Rosh Hashanah in the neighborhood!

Chabad will be providing services at no charge at Ida Noyes Hall (1212 E 59th Street).  Reservations are not required.

Makom Shalom, Chicago’s original Jewish Renewal community, will be holding services at no charge in the South Loop (637 South Dearborn St.).

Hyde Park is home to two lovely synagogues, KAM Isaiah Israel (Reform) and Rodfei Zedek (Conservative), that are very friendly and welcoming.  All students can attend services for free at both locations when they present a student ID (or a photo ID with a document saying that they are incoming students).  Community members are welcome to purchase tickets alongside synagogue members.  Either way, be sure to call in advance, as admittance to ticket holders is the most hassle-free!  Just click the links above for contact info and service times.

While Hillel will not be holding Reform or Conservative services, a student-led Orthodox prayer group called Yavneh may be holding services in the Hillel building, depending on interest.  For more information, email Melissa Walny at melissawalny@juf.org.

Yom Kippur:  9/17 - 9/18

This year, Yom Kippur falls on the Saturday before Orientation week.  While Hillel will not be holding Reform or Conservative services, a student-led Orthodox prayer group called Yavneh may be holding services in the Hillel building, depending on interest.  For more information, email Melissa Walny at melissawalny@juf.org.

Sukkot:  9/22 - 9/29

Students are invited to work together to build an awesome sukkah for meals, hanging out, and fun during the holiday!  We will be building the sukkah on Monday, September 20 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. This is a great way to meet new students and help build a new community for the new year.  Just as Abraham’s tent was open to all guests, so too will this sukkah be open to Jewish students of all backgrounds and denominations!  If you’d like to come help, email uchicagohillel@gmail.com.

As usual, Hillel will be taking orders for the Four Species (lulav and etrog) for students and local community members.  If you’re interested, please email Melissa Walny at melissawalny@juf,orgThe deadline for order placement is September 10th.
