Holidays

Holidays

Whether you love them or hate them you know the formula: they tried to kill us, we survived, let’s eat! If you loved them as a kid, you’ll love them again. Hated them? You’ll be surprised at how many options are available on campus.
What’s your style?
You know the phrase “two Jews, three opinions”? Just imagine, then, how many opinions there are on a campus this size as to how to observe the Jewish holidays. As a result, holidays on campus are a mix of a few larger events organized by planning teams and many smaller events organized by small groups of students. If you have a particular way that you want to observe the holidays, come talk to any of our People about what you’d like to do. Odds are that we can help you—either with funding, logistical support, or by integrating you into a planning team for a larger event (if that’s what you want).
Examples of large-scale events include High Holiday services (which include alternatives to services—such as text study, creative expression, and Yoga as you can see below), Chanukah and Purim parties, and an all-night study session for Shavuot. Examples of smaller made-to-order events include Passover seders in people’s dorms and apartments (smaller student-run seders in the last few years have ranged from traditional to a “skeptic’s seder” to a Socialist seder to a women’s seder).
We understand that different people have different goals for the holidays, and we want to help you find or create what feels right to you!

During holidays we host Egalitarian and Orthodox services, holiday meals, and numerous exciting alternative experiences. Students are also welcome to attend Shabbat and holiday services at the nearby synagogues located in Hyde Park. If you are interested in attending specifically Reform or Conservative services, you are invited to worship at KAM Isaiah Israel and Rodfei Zedek.
